NDT - Penetrant

What are the limitations of penetrant testing?

• The discontinuities to be detected must be open to the surface.

• The part must be cleaned after testing, as the penetrant may cause corrosion of the metal.

• Surface films make discontinuities harder to detect.

• The method is generally not suitable for low-density powder metallurgy parts or other porous materials.

• Reliable results cannot be obtained on very rough or porous surfaces.
